At Breck, it’s all Personal, and Person-Centered…

Jenny Morgan is an advanced practice nurse in geriatrics who had a vision for a better way to care for people in end stage disease. She built, owns, and operates Breck Home Residential Care Center, LLC.

Breck Homes are 2 six-person residential care homes.  They were built in 2004 as an alternative setting to large-scale medical-model institutional facilities. Breck provides care for residents 65 and older with dementia and other progressive diseases.  Jenny employs 25 staff members.

Breck has an age-in-place philosophy. This means that nearly all residents stay through hospice care. Understanding that continuity of care is critically important to the well-being of residents, the Breck team provides round the clock on site nursing support, and is supported by Bluestone Physician Services, which provides in house physician visits to residents.

Because of this philosophy, Breck residents do not enter the hospital system, except in very extreme cases. In the last ten years, only three residents have been admitted to a hospital. Not only does this save hundreds of thousands of dollars in Medicare costs, but more importantly, it means a better quality of life for residents. People with dementia face tremendous difficulties when they are moved to new environments – even for short periods of time.  Part of the Breck philosophy is to take away as much stress as possible from residents, and the families and friends who love them.

This model of care provides an outstanding staff to resident ratio and a person-centered approach to care. In addition, because Breck’s approach emphasizes continuity and collaboration, staff turnover rate is very low. Many of the care team have been with Breck for more than 10 years.  Even while working with COVID, Jenny and her team have been able to maintain normal operations while also taking care of the physical, mental, and financial needs of the staff.

Most importantly - Breck is a home. People come and go freely, residents are not isolated in their rooms, and the beloved resident pets offer their own special comfort. Before the COVID pandemic hit, family and friends could visit freely any time they wished and bring their own furry friends to visit. People eat homemade meals together at the dining room table, work on art and music together, and develop very special relationships with the staff.

And when it’s time for them to end their journey, they receive the best end-of-life care possible at a place that’s comfortable, familiar, safe - and feels like home.
